Swedish Crayfish Party 2014
Time for crayfish! Traditionally, a Swedish crayfish party takes place in the end of the summer. Crayfish parties have spread to all the Nordic countries and are generally held during August. Thistradition was started because crayfish harvesting in Sweden was, for most of the 20th century, legally limited to late summer. Since the summer lasts longer in BC than in Sweden, thys year’s party will take place on Friday, September 26. Since the Swedish crayfish became extinct, Swedes all over the world rely on IKEA and China to deliver these yummy and delicious shell fish for our sometimes rowdy parties.
These consitute of comical paper hats, paper tablecloths, paper lanterns (often depicting the Man in the Moon), and bibs. A cheerful atmosphere prevails amid noisy eating and traditional drinking songs (printed in a little booklet in English so that everyone can take part). It is considered customary to suck the juice out of the crayfish before shelling it. Don’t worry, we will show you how it is done!
Similar to last year, SWEA partners with the Swedish Cultural Society in organising the saltiest event of the year. The tickets include a three course meal with enterntainment during dinner, and dancing to Swedish music after. Babysitting can be arranged if required (let us know when you sign up so that we can organise this). Only 60 tickets will be sold, so purchase your ticket early!
