2018 SWEA Vancouver – UBC Scholarship awarded to Ms. Cybil Chea

Vancouver, BC June 2nd, 2018: The Vancouver chapter of the Swedish Women’s Educational Association (SWEA Vancouver) is pleased to announce the recipient of the merit-based SWEA-UBC Scholarship of 2018. Cybil Chea is currently studying her 3rd year at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, and a minor in Scandinavian Studies. Cybil has completed four Swedish language courses offered at UBC. The aim of these courses is to develop speaking, reading and writing in Swedish by means of communicative exercises, presentations and group discussions. Lena Karlström, lecturer in Swedish and Scandinavian studies at UBC, describes Cybil as “a conscientious, motivated, and curious student. She shows appreciation for different cultures and believes first-hand experience is an important factor in education”.

Cybil has been awarded $3,000 CAD for exchange studies at Lund University in Sweden, where she will take courses related to Swedish and Scandinavian film, culture, arts, and history, during September 2018 to December 2018. “Having taken, and now completed, Swedish language courses up to senior-level at UBC, this would be a great opportunity to put what I have learned into practice. Enrolling in Scandinavian courses at Lund University would also transfer back to UBC as applicable credits toward my Scandinavian Studies minor.”, Cybil says. She also mentions that “From childhood to now, this interest [of Scandinavian Culture] continues to grow, naturally leading to my pursuit of the minor at university.”.

SWEA International is a global network with 7,500 Swedish speaking women in more than 70 chapters in over 30 countries in the world. It is the largest organization promoting Swedish language, culture and traditions, and grants more than $300,000 CAD in donations and scholarships. The Vancouver chapter was founded in 1989. Cybil Chea is the 7th recipient of the SWEA-UBC Scholarship for Undergraduate studies in Sweden, since it was initiated in 2007.
